Welcome to my website. My name is Marijn Bierhof. I have dedicated my website to my favorite hobby: miniature wargaming and painting miniatures. Miniature wargaming can be seen as a complex blend of Chess, Risk and Stratego. Basically you and your buddies are playing a game where opposing forces meet on the table and join in battle. You use your wits and of course a bit of luck to defeat your opponent. The most important difference with traditional board games is that you are using small pewter miniatures that you must paint yourself. In addition you use pieces of scenery that represent the environment with elements like houses, trees, etc. When combined this yields a very attractive scene with painted miniatures. The most important part about the hobby is the social aspect: sitting around the table with your buddies and some beers and having a great time.
As the title shows I am a real paintoholic. I love painting miniatures and this website is also dedicated to this part of the hobby. I hope you find the information and the photos useful. On the website you can find pictures, tutorials and downloads by me. As the site grows and grows I hope to add more varied elements so the website will show a broad spectrum of elements from my favorite hobby. If you have tips or comments, you can mail me by clicking on the small envelope in the navigation bar.
Website News
January 21 2012: Not a new paintjob, but a new photo. About eight years ago I painted a Mage Knight Pyre Spirit for the game. I still had it collecting dust. When I saw the model a couple of weeks ago I thought he would make an excellent Feralgheist for Hordes. So I clipped him off the clicky base and repainted him in half an hour. I gave him a swampy base and presto! Another Minion done. You can find him in the Hordes gallery.
January 1 2012: Happy new year everybody! Have a good one in 2012. And to kick off the new year I have painted another miniature for my Khador force: Koldun Kapitan Valachev. He's a great miniature with some nice rules, so a good addition to my force. Painting him was a blast. But unfortunately he still has a glossy shine, as I'm having problems with my matte varnish. None of them get real dull. I've used Dullcote and Modelmate in the past, but each use made me feel like half of my brain died! The fumes are just terrible. So I want to use a different matte varnish. So far no success though...You can find Valachev in the Warmachine gallery.
November 30 2011: Yeah! Finally painted some Warmachine again. This time I painted 'Drago' the awesome warjack from Khador. I painted him for a Hardcore tournament in January where you have to field a painted force. I stuck him on a Khador wreck marker. Made him more viscious! You can find him in the Warmachine gallery.
November 22 2011: Last Saturday I played 6-7 games of Strange Aeons with some mates in Amersfoort. We had a blast. What a great game and what great guys. A fantastic day and I have made a battle report of the first game. You can find it in the Battlereports section.
November 12 2011: Painted another miniature...that one went fast. I painted Warmachine's Harlan Versh for a fellow Press Ganger's son. The son, Vince, is in the hospital for a lung transplant...heavy business! Fortunately he has a donor and the transplant went well. The fellow PG asked his co-PG's if they could chime in with some encouraging e-mails. But the Press Gang goes further and a lot of us painted miniatures for Vince. I wanted to join in and painted Versh for him. He's off to Belgium next Monday! You can find Versh in the Warmachine gallery.
November 7 2011: It's been an eternity since I posted an update. But it's one I feel really good about. I painted a Valkyrie for Heresy Miniatures and used NMM on it. In addition I made a snowy base with some new snow stuff from Secret Weapon Miniatures and it looks great. Nice wet and slushy snow. You can find the Valkyrie in the Heresy gallery.
July 4 2011: Finally an update again. Me and Marjolein moved house and my hobby room is almost ready for use. Just the finishing touches left! In the meantime I found an old tutorial I had on my previous website, which I transferred to this website. You can find it in the Tutorials section.
April 7 2011: Painted a new addition to my Minions force for Hordes...the Ironback Spitter. A fantastic sculpt of an old, gnarly, grumpy turtle-like creature. Basecoated and dipped him and then added moss and grass and swampy plants. I like how the moss on his back really make him look old and natural. You can find him in the Hordes gallery.
February 28 2011: And the second report is online...three to go! Check it out in the Battle Reports section.
February 27 2011: Me and my mates played 5 games of Strange Aeons yesterday at Ducosim in the Netherlands. Loads of fun and I made lots of photos! I am doing battle reports and the first one is in the Battle Reports section. Check it out.
February 25 2011: Tomorrow I'll be playing some Strange Aeons again at an event. I wanted to paint some new stuff to try out and want crazy in one week time! Here's what I either painted or in the case of the D&D prepaints: based. I made them as links so it's easy to find them.
*Lord Violator (Heresy's Posing Vampire)
*Wynn (Heresy's Dark Lord)
*Twitch (Heresy's Apprentice Mage)
*Wanda (Uncle Mike Worldwide's Threshold Agent)
*Shambler (Reaper Miniatures...thing)
*Night Gaunt (RAFM's Night Gaunt)
*4 Graves (plastic graves from Games Workshop)
*5 Graves (resin graves by Tengu Models)
*Statue (don't have a clue who did this one)
*Swarms & Queen (D&D prepaints)
*Fire Daemon (D&D prepaint)
*Daemonic Hound (D&D prepaint)
You can also find the first three in the Heresy gallery and the rest in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
February 16 2011: And two more Minions done for my Hordes army! This amry is almost painting itself...it's going so fast and I'm having so much fun! I finished my first warlock: Bloody Barnabus. Although a simple sculpt, I REALLY like him. Next is the Totem Hunter, which is a Heresy model. I like it a lot more than the Totem Hunter from Privateer Press. To distinguish it well, I gave it the Totem Hunter's spear. Next up are a Bull Snapper and Wrong Eye! You can find Barnabus in the Hordes gallery and the Totem Hunter/Predator in the Heresy and Hordes gallery.
February 7 2011: Finished a total of *three* miniatures! First off is the entry for the WAMP ladder. He's called 'Butcher Pete' and is inspired by the great song from Fallout 3. The sculpt is from Jacques-Alexandre Gillois and was an absolute blast to paint. Fantastic sculpt and I enjoyed the painting all the time. I printed a Grognak the Barbarian for the base and I'm very happy with the end result. You can find him in the Other gallery, in the sci-fi part. Next up are two more gators for my Hordes Minions! I painted them in notime and also liked doing them. The formula I'm using is going really fast. I hope to field my gators fully painted soon. You can find the Bull Snapper and Snapjaw in the Hordes gallery, under the Minions.
February 6 2011: The showcase miniature is almost finished. I only need to finish the chainsaw. In between I quickly did a new Hordes Minions Wrastler. I received a Minion army for Hordes last month and quickly assembled them. I absolutely love the models and the way they play. I want to paint them quickly, so used quick and effective methods on the Wrastler. I used my new Green Line paper plants and some water effects on him to get a swampy jungle look. The next crocs are already waiting for some paint...you can find the Wrastler in the Hordes gallery.
December 17 2010: In between a showcase miniature I did the last of my AT-43...quite a lot actually! I did 14 small based models, 13 medium based models and 1 large based model. Jup, quite some work, but now all of my AT-43 is done! Woohoo...a project complete! You can find all the images in the Rackham gallery.
December 21 2010: After I posted images of my AT-43 stuff online, a friend offered some more of them (thanks Roon!). I immediately said "YES!" and quickly repainted them. Once again simple stuff, but with excellent and effective results. I'm really happy with the final result. You can find the Soldaty unit in the Rackham gallery.
December 18 2010: Yesterday we had a 'Paintalong' in the new store in Groningen. It started at one and finished at five...and behold...I started and finished a miniature within the four hours. Nice! It's a funny and characterful bust by Kraken Editions. He was a blast to paint and will look nicely in my showcase :). You can find him in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
December 12 2010: I received a package with AT-43 miniatures this week. I bought them cheaply at Fantasy Flight Games. I really like the sculpts, although the painting sucks a lot on them. To make them look a lot better I dipped them and then painted some details. I like the end result for a few hours work. You can find them in the Rackham gallery.
December 1 2010: Yesterday I did the last touches on Gorten Grundback, the Warmachine Dwarf Warcaster. Really nice sculpt by Kev White, but lots of armor plates. In the end I'm not that happy with him, but at least he's finished. Also make the first pictures of miniatures with my new Canon EOS 500D. Have to get used to it, but it sure makes prettier pictures than my Samsung! You can find Gorten in the Warmachine gallery.
November 21 2010: September 24 was the day me and my wife got married. I wanted to thank her for all the support throughout the years with my hobby. How better to thank her for this, than to make a diorama. I found two fantastic miniatures made by Dark Sword Miniatures which interacted really well and fit the theme and occasion. The diorama itself was made with styrofoam, lots and lots of foliage and clear resin as water. The heart shaped lily pad was made from Miliput. It was really nice to construct and paint and my wife was really happy with it.
You can find the photos of the diorama in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
November 8 2010: I just finished the big brother of the small warjacks I did during the last two weeks: the Basher. A fantastic miniature and a blast to paint (pun not intended). I'm working on their master now: Gorten Grundback. You can find the Basher in the Warmachine gallery.
October 31 2010: Another two quick paintjobs. Painted a second Grundback Gunner and a Grundback Blaster. I have to finish two Bashers, Gorten Grundback and Thor Steinhammer in 2 weeks. Quite some work to do! You can find the two new warjacks and a group shot in the Warmachine gallery.
October 25 2010: Added a quickie! Painted a Grundback Gunner for the Searforge list I'm painting for Warmachine. Just speedpainting, bit loads of fun! You can find them in the Warmachine gallery.
October 11 2010: Had a busy month with loads of stuff going on (expect an update soon!). But in the meantime I finished an Infinity Yu Jing Daofei for Wednesday's game. Extremely bright colors and loads of fun to do. You can find her in the Infinity gallery.
August 31 2010: Just finished painting another entry for a painting competition. It's Zombie Hunter Kev by Hasslefree Miniatures. You get three weapon options with him and I opted for the classy katana. And yes, he's wearing a Spongebob sweater :D. The tattoo is the one Mike Tyson has on his face (silly man). Works like a treat on miniature faces. You can find Kev in the Hasslefree gallery.
August 24 2010: Finally finished my enormous commission paintjob. The client wanted me to paint a big animé model and I agreed...but I didn't see how big the model actually was before I received it! It's huge...about 30cm high. She was also the reason why I bought my airbrush. But after months of working on her, she is finally complete. Very difficult model, learnt a lot and in the end she looks very nice (although I'm not an animé fan). But mostly glad she's finished so I can really get back to my stuff. You can find her in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
August 7 2010: Hail to the King baby! I finished my Ash from Hasslefree. Fantastic sculpt from a fantastic movie. Hope to field him next week in a massive game with loads of zombies and only a handful of survivors. You can find Ash in the Hasslefree gallery.
July 21 2010: I received the brand new Hordes Circle Orboros Woldguardian last week and decided to speedpaint it for my Circle of Orgoreos army, together with Megalith. Really happy with it! You can find him and my Megorelith in the HORDES gallery.
June 29 2010: And another Pulp City miniature done! This one was also repainted. Like Hellsmith a terrific sculpt that painted itself quickly. I replaced his base with an excellent base from Fenris Games and added some brass casings from ElodieMae.com. You can find Guerilla in the Pulp City gallery.
June 22 2010: Finished my first Pulp City miniature. I bought this one from a fellow gamer who had already painted him. During the last two evenings I repainted most parts and added some nice touches, like a flaming fist and a glowing lava base. Really enjoyed painting him and can't wait to see him stomping around a city, swinging his hellhamer around. You can find him in a new gallery, the Pulp City gallery!
May 17 2010: I just finished painting a very freaky miniature. It is a Proto Shoggoth (or Son of Yog-Sothoth) sculpted by Lead Adventure's "Blackstone". I painted it with Tamiya Clear Red, Black Dip, Tamiya Clear Red and then applied the eyes and bloodthreads. Superfast and very freaky! You can find it in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
March 26 2010: These guys were as good as finished somewhere in February, but I still had to do the last finishing touches. I did them this week, and now the Great Bears from Gallowswood are finally finished. Although I'm not a big fan of the sculpts, they were a real blast to paint. I used freehands to show who's the boss in the unit. You can find them in the Warmachine gallery.
March 24 2010: Yesterday I finished painting another Infinity model: Ko Dali. She's one of the best sculpts I have ever seen, she's so superdynamic and her pose is superb. A great model to paint and I like the final effect on her. You can find her in the Infinity gallery.
March 8 2010: A lot of new stuff done! I painted a lot of Cthulhu-related miniatures for last Saturday's event. Last Saturday was Ducosim, one of the bigger game events in Holland. I demo'ed and played the game Strange Aeons with three other guys and needed some more new interesting miniatures. We had a blast. For this event I painted:
*Investigator with Tommygun (the one with the green hat)
*Investigator with Bolt Action Rifle (the guy in red with the black hat)
*Werewolf
*Conglomerate (the mass of arms, legs and mouth)
*Tcho Tcho (the small yellow apish creature)
*Formless Spawn of Tsathoggua (the blue blob)
*Two Serpentmen
*Suicide Cultist (freebie!)
*Six Clue markers to use during the games
You can find their photos in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
February 2010: I just finished writing the tutorial on doing aquatic bases with epoxy glue. You can find on in the Tutorials page.
January 15 2010: Woohoo! Finished a miniature for a painting competition. The miniature is from Kraken Editions (the Artefactory range) and it is totally bonkers! It's some kind of mutated dog. I placed it with its tongue on top of a barrel in some kind of radioactive pool of gunk. Had loads of fun painting him, and I think it's one of my best painted miniatures so far. I can really recommend Kraken's Artefactory range for painting. They have really original and fun sculpts and they're a blast to paint. You can find the photo in the Other Manufacturers gallery. I am working on a tutorial how you can make a base with radioactive gunk/slime.
December 20 2009: Me and my mates played our first game of Strange Aeons today. We had a real blast. What an awesome game! You can find the report in the Battlereports section. In addition, I finished painting two agents for today. They cost me about four hours in total, but I'm real happy with them. You can find them in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
December 15 2009: And another couple finished! I quickly painted two Scrawny Ones and the pentacles that come with them. I painted them by basecoating, a couple of quick glazes, a dip and then highlighting and doing the eyes. One hour total painting time. That's good for gaming! You can find them in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
December 14 2009: Just finished painting my awesome and humongous Khador Wardog. This totally rediculous dog was sculpted by Degra and is a fantastic sculpt. It's so silly, it looks really cool on the table. Being killed by this monster is the ultimate insult...you can find him in the Others Manufacturers and in the Warmachine gallery.
November 21: Wow, it was about time I posted an update! Seems like an eternity ago. I just finished painting a commission piece for a friend: a Warhammer Chaos Troll King. It's a special resin edition only sold on eBay and looks great. The painting took ages because he has about a zillion spikes and these don't paint up quickly. I'm happy he's finished. A lot of work but I am happy with the freaky colors and general looks. You can find him in Other Manufacturers gallery.
September 13: I finished the last models for my Circle Orgoreos army for last Saturday's tournament. I had to finish the shifting stones and the main model: Krueger the Bloodwrath. I had a lot of fun painting Krueger. The sculpt is terrific. I had loads of fun with his cloak. I converted the shifting stones by sculpting some eyes on them so I can track which model is which when tracking damage. You can find them in the Hordes gallery. Oh, and I got 3rd place out of 18 in the tournament! So that was a good start for my fully painted army.
September 6 2009: The NMM tutorial is on hold as I have two deadlines: a painting competition and a Warmachine tournament. For the painting competition I just finished a nice Krash car, which I named The Pink Lady. The contest's theme is 'Past Glory' so a mangled, rusty vehicle of a game which is almost five years dead seems nice enough :). You can find him in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
August 23 2009: Finally step 4 is done. You can find it at the Tutorials section.
August 10 2009: Step 3 is now completed and uploaded. You can find it at the Tutorials section.
August 1 2009: I completed the first step of the tutorial. Check it out at the Tutorials section.
July 31 2009: Me and my girlfriend have returned from an excellent holiday to Wales and I am eager to get back into the hobby. To get started I begun writing a tutorial on painting NMM (Non Metal Metal). I did this after I got an e-mail with questions on doing this technique. And of course I got carried away and promised to do a tutorial. It will be a good addition to my website once it is finished! The first step is online and you can find it in the Tutorials section.
July 5 2009: Okay, I've got a *massive* update on the website. First of all you can see my website has received a small change in looks. I didn't like the logo and banners anymore and I changed them into something I like a lot more.
In addition, I have uploaded a *lot* of new photos to the Other Manufacturers and HORDES gallery. I joined the Lead Painter's League on the Lead Adventure Forum. This was a league with 10 consequtive rounds of one week. For each week you had to submit an entry; new entries received bonus points. I painted eight entries for the league and didn't do anything else in terms of painting. So that explains the silence on my website. I have uploaded all my entries to the galleries. I hope you'll enjoy the many entries I have painted.
Finally, I am working on a website for my own miniatures game, Cosmic Horror. It's a new game that focuses on H.P.Lovecraft's literature and his Cthulhu Mythos he created. Basically, it's a horror-adventure game where two players play against each other. One player controls the good guys, the investigators, while the other controls the forces of evil. I'll upload the website as soon as it's ready.
April 12 2009:Just finished the second Red Box Games miniature for Tre Manor. Brynda was even more fun to paint than Sigurd. I love the way she's sculpted and I had some fun with her shield. Tried some new metallics on her (Vallejo Airbrush paint) and these are really nice! You can find her in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
March 23 2009: Finally finished a new miniature. I've just painted a Dwarf for Red Box Games. Tre's vikingesque miniatures are fantastic and Sigurd really rocks too. I love the way Tre sculpted the fur cloak...great stuff and awesome to paint too. I made the scenic base myself. I'll do a tutorial soon. You can find Sigurd in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
February 27 2009: Tomorrow is another WARMACHINE tournament I'm joining and I have just finished painting my Beast 09 miniature. A great sculpt and a joy to paint. I was surprised with the time invested. Especially the ice axe went superfast and I like the effect it has. I also painted Yuri the Axe; nothing special but just another cool beatstick in my Khador army. The best thing is I can play fully painted now! You can find Beast 09 and Yuri the Axe in the WARMACHINE gallery.
February 22 2009: Today is the deadline for a painting competition I am joining. I have just finished painting the fantastic Ghoul bust by JMD Miniatures. The sculpt is marvelous with extremely fine detail and it was a joy to paint (although my girlfriend doesn't like the look of the creep at all!). I made two sets of photos...one set without any blood effects and one set with blood effects. You decide which one you like more. You can find the Ghoul bust in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
February 16 2009: Another addition to my Khador force. I only have two models left before I can play my fully painted tournament list. Woohoo! Two weeks left, so that means I have to brush my ass off! You can find the image of the Koldun Lord in the WARMACHINE folder.
January 21 2009: Yeah! Another update for my Black Voodoo Raiders. Monday I finished the *awesome* leader model by Mad Puppet Miniatures. I had a blast painting him. I had some trouble with the Dullcoat matt varnish but in the end the photo worked out fine. You can find him in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
January 18 2009: Here are the first additions to my website for 2009. Me and my buddies have begun playing a new game. We combined the awesome game of Necromunda with the racing rules of Gorka Morka to give us a Mad Max inspired game. I am playing the 'Black Voodoo Raiders' which are basically based on Fallout 3's Raiders. I am using all kinds of miniatures. The latest additions to my gang are a painted car and a painted buggy which I am using as a Trike. You can find the pictures in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
I hope to finish two WARMACHINE miniatures soon and will surely add them to the right gallery. Stay tuned.
November 9 2008: Wow...FINALLY finished a miniature again...and one I am really proud of too. Yesterday was the Crisis event in Antwerp, Belgium. This annual event also has a painting competition and I decided I wanted to compete in this one. Therefore I painted the "Victor Cat Helsing" miniature by Tale of War Miniatures. It is a terrific miniature and was a blast to paint. It took me about one and a half week of painting and I think he is my best miniature so far. In the end the miniature got gold so I was really, really happy! I now have a cool trophy on my display cabinet. I hope to compete again next year! You can find Victor van Helsing in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
July 20 2008: Woohoo! I finished some new miniatures and added a load of new pictures. First I painted three Cephalyx Overlords for WARMACHINE. Terrific miniatures and a total blast to paint. I also went nuts on their bases and I am very happy with the way they turned out. You can find them in the WARMACHINE gallery.
Next I painted 11 cultists in 2 days...2 days! That is probably a new record for me. I am working on a new rules set with a friend of mine that focuses on pulp like Indiana Jones, Call of Cthulhu, etc. And cultists can be found in whatever pulp setting you can find. I speedpainted them but I am very happy with them nonetheless. Lovely miniatures by Bob Murch and awesome to paint. They can be found in the Other Manufacturers gallery.
July 19 2008: I finally added some additions to the website. I finally added the Bio where you can read more about me (if you like stuff like that ;^)). In addition I added a new tutorial and a battle report in this new section. Now we're getting somewhere! I hope to keep updating my website more often (this one was due to a colleague telling me that parts of my website were incomplete...and she was right!).
June 1 2008: Another one! This time it is Heresy Miniatures' "The Major". An awesome model that I painted as a war veteran for near-future gaming. I gave him camo-pants, a Punisher shirt and some tribal tattoos. Don't mess with this guy...
May 31 2008: I finally added the Yu Jing Tiger Soldier to the gallery. He's painted for quite a while but I never got around to shooting a picture. You can find him in the Infinity gallery.
May 14 2008: Finished another two Infinity models! I painted two Zanshis and I am very happy with them. You can find them in the Infinity gallery.
May 1 2008: I added a new gallery (Infinity) with a Yu Jing Ninja and I also added a brand new Heresy Necromancer to the Heresy gallery.
March 30 2008: I finally finished all the galleries and added the first tutorial! I hope to add more stuff soon.
February 26 2008 - I added pictures in the WARMACHINE gallery. This layout is not final but gives an indication of what I am doing and how all pictures are turning out. A lot of work but worth the effort.
February 3 2008 - I started building my website and slowly I am getting towards a product I am happy with. Today I have been building the website itself and making the frameset. I hope to add some pictures soon. Come back when you can :-)
